This book made me laugh! The stories are short but feature some hilarious illustrations. If you appreciate dark/quirky humor I would recommend this book.

I wasn’t sure about this one for a bit while I was reading. Once I got over my discomfort, I really enjoyed the sick sense of humour and the illustrations. “Hans, the weird exchange student” and “Kevin, the minivan with extremely low morals” are my two favourites and I read them aloud to my girlfriend. The very contemporary nature of these tales is wonderful and I can see the North Shore in them for sure.

At first glance, Graham Roumieu's full-colour illustrations and the sparse text on each page make this look like a kid's book. It is not. One child is barfing copious amounts and another has pooped his pants right there on the front cover. The stories are nasty and gory and bad behaviour goes unpunished. Hee hee hee!

Hugely disappointing. I've liked other Coupland fiction but this strikes me as a cash grab. Some pages have only 5 lines on them and no illustrations, and this very slim volume still comes in at only 131 pages. Most tales are silly/stupid not clever at all. The illustrations are often simply filler, rarely clever, and occasionally simply baffling. The story about the odd foreign student worked best - it had some clever and playful turns and twists - otherwise these feel like someone trying too hard to be "naughty". Try H. Belloc's "cautionary tales" if you want funny and dark. (Maltilda:Who Told Lies is priceless.)

I was amused by the tale of the Action Figure With Issues, and Cindy the Inappropriate Role Model had her moments. Otherwise I found the stories dopey and forgettable. I enjoyed the frontispiece illustration of Medusa, and wished there had been a story to go with it.

Every story made me laugh, but uncomfortably. It actually is a bit disturbing but ultimately hilarious.
