Add a Commenthorribly fascinating. It was definitely hard to read at times, but it makes an all the more inspiring story of Jaycee's courage and strength.
Very sad but at the same time, very inspiring story of a young girl who had to survive.
A horrible story. I found it hard to understand how Stockholm syndrome could have damaged her mind so much that she wouldn't attempt to escape, especially in the later years when her kidnappers gave her more freedom. I know that Stockholm syndrome is a psychological condition that is recognised and documented in many different cases, but it just boggles my mind that the even when she was at the police station at the end of the book she kept repeating the "story" of being on the run from an abusive boyfriend. Why couldn't she see that she was safe? I also found the passages with bad grammar irritating. At the beginning of the book she explains why her writing seems to jump around and change topic abruptly (not something I actually noticed), but that doesn't explain why the grammar couldn't have been editied to make it more readable. The rating lost 1/2 a star because of the grammar.
A heartbreaking story and of course one feels compassion for the author, but honestly the story is written very poorly and after the first third of the book, it rambles and loses focus. I guess it reflects the life the author experienced, but it doesn't make for coherent reading.
I realized that this was going to be a difficult read, however, it was worse than I feared! Jaycee really is a survivor, I cannot believe the sexual and emotional abuse that she lived through at the hands of a monster. If you are thinking about reading it, be prepared to have to take breaks from it.
I didn't even realize who story I was reading but it all came back to me in a flash. I remember hearing about her being found. Was well written and with the dates written made me think where was I and what was I doing while she was living this way of life. Hope she does write another book.
I read this book in just over one sitting. This book took a hold of me in a way I couldn’t have imagined. It moved me and will resonate with me forever. I’m a strong-willed person, more like determined and stubborn, so at first I didn’t get why she never escaped. But as I continued to read, I could get inside her head and understand why she didn’t, how Phillip’s psychological manipulation was so horrible -- and that’s beside the appalling, and continual rape of Jaycee as a minor. I am so happy that Jaycee shared her story not because I want to see her in the news and exploited all over again but it gives people courage and builds inner strength. The quality of writing does feel more simple, maybe even lesser, compared to other bestselling fiction books. However, at the same time, that’s what makes her story read so well and draws the reader in. I’ve read so many reviews where people have read it in one sitting. I like her comment about wanting to write a best-seller because I bought the book in the hope I contribute to her dream. She deserves it. This book gave me hope! And I definitely feel guilty about feeling bad about myself now, because she carries on as such a hopeful person despite her experiences. I recommend this book to anyone because everyone at least has family or friends and this book shows how love can carry you through some of the toughest experiences.
Wow! That's all I have to say. She describes her story in vivid details but that's what makes it so powerful. This is a must read.
A difficult read. She writes from a child's perspective and reflect in her adult voice. I had to put this book down multiple times and was unable to finish it.
Difficult to read, but it's amazing to learn what she went through and refreshing to see that she's doing well today.
