Conceived to provide a bone marrow match for her leukemia-stricken sister, teenage Anna begins to question her moral obligations in light of countless medical procedures and decides to fight for the right to make decisions about her own body. 448p.
Anna was concieved through IVF as a genetic match to her sister Kate, who was diagnosed with acute promyelocytic leukemia at the age of 2. Initially only Anna's cord blood is donated, but as Kate's disease progresses and changes, Anna's parents have her donate blood and marrow several times. When Anna is 13 and Kate is 16, Kate's kidneys fail. The girls' parents expect Anna to donate a kidney to save Kate's life, as a transplant is Kate's only hope for survival. Anna hires a lawyer, Campbell Alexander, to help her become medically emancipated from her parents. This book follows the course of the trial, as Anna's family tries to come to terms with the lawsuit, and explores the family's life since Kate's diagnosis and their complex relationships with each other. Anna loves her sister--but is she willing to let her die?

Add a CommentFast read, and interesting. But I don't think this is a book I would read again... although I did like the ending.
Good book. Characters are well developed. I loved the lawyers sense of humor. The mother, i wasn't a fan of. It has a sad ending. Well written.
This was a really good book, but the ending... Not sure how I feel about it.
A beautiful book...the last five chapters had me in tears! Definitely recommended, although I highly suggest reading this during the holidays where you'll have enough time to re-cooperate after reading...
This is such an incredible book. The way that it was written was truly incredible as it gave you an overall view of how all the characters felt about their situations. It is remarkable the way that Jodi Picoult mananged to write the story, telling you some things but holding back others until the end which made it hard to put down! The ending was completely unexpected and happy in a way. This is a must read for anyone!

Cheese platter.
This was the 2nd book of Jodi Picoult I read, and proved interesting with the main character and her family, as well as, the situations that came up. I was not expecting the ending, as it threw me for the loop. Enjoyed reading this book, not what I expected at all.

This was the 1st of Picoult's books that I read and remains my favourite still. Loved the surprise twist near the end. This book made me a Picoult fan and I've read several of her books now ... always a good story.
